Location: Along the Guanacaste Mountain
Range in the Guanacaste and Alajuela provinces, 27 km northeast
of Liberia.
With an altitude of 1,853 meters above sea level, Rincón
de la Vieja Volcano is one of five volcanoes in the Guanacaste
range. Though currently passing through a period of relative
inactivity, it is an active volcano exhibiting sporadic
small eruptions and steam. On clear days, the volcano’s
summit offers spectacular views of Lake Nicaragua, along
with Maderas and Concepción volcanoes, while views
to the south and southeast provide glimpses of Culebra Bay,
Santa Elena and the gulfs of Papagayo and Nicoya. Also within
the limits of the national park are Jilgueros Lagoon, Las
Pailas and the Cataratas Perdidas waterfalls.
